🍷 Alcohols, Phenols & Ethers

Oxygen-containing functional groups provide diverse synthetic routes through nucleophilic substitution, dehydration rearrangements, and aromatic substitutions. High-yield competitive exam highlights include Lucas reagent kinetics, Pinacol rearrangement migratory aptitudes, Kolbe vs Reimer-Tiemann phenol carboxylations, and Williamson ether cleavage under hot concentrated HI.

1. 🧪 Alcohols: Classification & Rearrangements

1.1 Lucas Test (Distinction of 1circ,2circ,3circ Alcohols)

Reagent: Anhydrous ZnCl2+conc. HCl(SN1 mechanism forming insoluble R−Cl)
  • 3circ Alcohols: Immediate turbidity/cloudiness appears within seconds at room temperature (3circC+ forms instantaneously).
  • 2circ Alcohols: Turbidity appears within 5−10 minutes.
  • 1circ Alcohols: Solution remains clear; turbidity appears only on prolonged heating.

1.2 Pinacol-Pinacolone Rearrangement

Acid-catalyzed dehydration of 1,2-diols (Pinacols) to Ketones with 1,2-alkyl/aryl shift:

Pinacol ((CH3)2C(OH)−C(OH)(CH3)2)→H2SO4Pinacolone ((CH3)3C−CO−CH3)+H2O

Migratory Aptitude Rules:

Aryl Groups>Alkyl Groups>HydrogenAmong Aryl Groups: p-Anisyl (−C6H4OCH3)>p-Tolyl (−C6H4CH3)>Phenyl (−C6H5)>p-Chlorophenyl>p-Nitrophenyl

(More electron-rich aryl groups migrate significantly faster!).

2. 🌸 Phenols: Industrial Synthesis & Named Reactions

2.1 Industrial Synthesis from Cumene (Isopropylbenzene)

Cumene+O2→Air, 95−135∘CCumene Hydroperoxide (Ph−C(CH3)2−O−O−H)→H+/H2OPhenol+Acetone (High yield byproduct)

2.2 Kolbe-Schmitt Reaction (Synthesis of Salicylic Acid)

Sodium Phenoxide (PhO−Na+)+CO2→400 K,4−7 atmSodium Salicylate→H+Salicylic Acid (o-Hydroxybenzoic acid)
  • Acetylation of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride gives Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid).

2.3 Reimer-Tiemann Reaction (Synthesis of Salicylaldehyde)

Phenol+CHCl3+3KOH→60∘CSalicylaldehyde (o-Hydroxybenzaldehyde)+3KCl+2H2O
  • Active Electrophile: Dichlorocarbene (:CCl2, a neutral singlet carbocation-like electrophile with empty p-orbital).
  • If CCl4 is used instead of CHCl3, the product is Salicylic Acid.

3. 🌐 Ethers: Synthesis & Cleavage Mechanisms

3.1 Williamson Ether Synthesis (SN2)

R−O−Na++R′−X→R−O−R′+NaX
  • Condition for High Yield: Substrate R′−X must be strictly 1circ or Methyl halide.
  • Trap: If R′−X is a 3circ alkyl halide, the alkoxide acts as a strong base, and 100% E2 elimination occurs to give an alkene!

3.2 Cleavage of Ethers with Hot Concentrated HI

R−O−R′+HI→Alkyl Iodide+Alcohol
  1. When both R and R′ are 1circ or 2circ (SN2 Mechanism):
    • I− attacks the less hindered alkyl group:CH3−O−CH(CH3)2+HI→CH3I+(CH3)2CHOH
  2. When one alkyl group is 3circ, Benzyl, or Allyl (SN1 Mechanism):
    • Cleavage proceeds via the stable carbocation $ o I^-$ attacks the 3circ or benzyl group:(CH3)3C−O−CH3+HI→(CH3)3C−I+CH3OH
  3. Anisole (Ph−O−CH3) with HI:
    • The Ph−O bond has partial double bond character $ o$ bond cleavage occurs strictly at O−CH3:Ph−O−CH3+HI→Ph−OH(Phenol)+CH3I
